Applying Wall Decals to Textured Surfaces

We sometimes get customer questions about difficulty using vinyl wall decals on rougher textured wall surfaces, so we at Wall Decor Plus More did a test. We applied a wall decal to a surface called "knockdown" texture. Testing our products "in the field" enables us to help nearly everyone enjoy the benefits of using vinyl wall decals in their home decor.

Here are some tips and how-to's to help you use wall decals on your rough or textured walls:

1. Purchase wall decals that have bolder, plain print. If your walls aren't as rough as the ones in these pictures, you can get by with some cursive, script lettering; but generally the bolder, plain fonts are easier to apply. The thickness of the lettering provides more material to stick to the wall, which makes for better adherence.

2. Take your time and use patience when applying the wall decal. By working slowly and carefully, you CAN get the decal applied. The biggest challenge is getting the top tape layer off of the lettering. Since the wall isn't a smooth surface, the decals won't adhere perfectly. If a letter gets moved accidentally, you might need to place it by hand. This is another reason why plain lettering works better than cursive, connected lettering.

3. Firmly rub the wall decal down with your fingers after you remove the tape. In the photo above, you can see the slight curve in the "N" that came after we rubbed each letter down well. The decal  curved into a groove in the wall, which is good, it means it has adhered. You can only see the curve by looking very closely–no one will be the wiser.

The pictures above were taken two weeks after the vinyl wall decal was applied to the "knockdown" textured wall. We wanted to be sure that the decal STAYED on the wall–and it did! We are confident you'll have the same success with our vinyl wall decals.
