Best Paint Finish for Wall Stickers

Do you LOVE wall stickers? And want to use them on your next redecorating project? If so, here is some helpful information about paint and wall surfaces to keep in mind as you make your decor choices.

1 - PAINT FINISHES - Satin or glossy paint provides a good finish for applying wall stickers. Enamel paint is even better, as it is less porous. Flat paint is too porous and doesn't allow the stickers to adhere very well. Zero VOC paint also doesn't work well with wall stickers. 2 - TEXTURE VS SHINE - In our experience, a shiny paint (satin, gloss, enamel) is better, even if there is some texture on the wall, than using a dull (flat) paint on a wall that is smooth/without texture. Our special post about working with texture can be found at How to Apply Wall Stickers to Textured or "Knockdown" Surfaces.  

3 - DRYING VS CURING - Just because paint is dry to the touch does not mean it has cured or hardened all the way through. This is a crucial difference, and can take several days, depending on the paint and on the weather, but plan on at least 2 weeks. Check your paint can label for specific curing times or contact us at  Wall Decor Plus More and we'll try to help you. The stronger the odor your new paint gives off, the longer you should let it cure before applying wall stickers. The odor likely comes from the compounds and gases in the paint. Those gases can break down the adhesive on the wall stickers, making them not stick or fall off sooner.

 

4 - MOISTURE & WALL STICKERS - Now, this does not mean wall stickers won't work just fine in your bathroom, kitchen, or laundry room. They will! What we are talking about here is ongoing moisture behind your sheet rock that can cause problems for your wall stickers. Think walls that back up to cooling systems, water pipes, overhead windows or windows that have been boarded up. These areas are prone to condensation that may not be obvious at the time of sticker application. Wall Stickers WILL Work in Your Bathroom!

The happy answer is YES!

Bathrooms are usually high in moisture, so it's a logical question, and one we get asked frequently. Below are a couple of things to remember so your Wall Stickers will "stay stuck" and bring some life to a room that can often be dull and dreary.



Will moisture affect the Wall Stickers? Yes and no. The key to carefree Wall Stickers in the bathroom is to make sure the wall surface is CLEAN and DRY at the time of application. That's when the bonding occurs. Once you have a good "stick," you are good to go. Feel free to apply them around/above your shower area, as shown in the photo. The Funky Circle Wall Stickers shown in the bathroom above have been up for almost a year without any peeling or looseness.

The bathroom wall shown above is also textured. In this case, some spots got a little rough. In those rough areas, we had to occasionally smooth down part of the wall sticker a time or two to help it "remember" where it was supposed to be. Right now, a year later, the Wall Stickers are all firmly attached and we have a "fun & funky" bathroom!

Applying Wall Decals to Textured Surfaces

We sometimes get customer questions about difficulty using vinyl wall decals on rougher textured wall surfaces, so we at Wall Decor Plus More did a test. We applied a wall decal to a surface called "knockdown" texture. Testing our products "in the field" enables us to help nearly everyone enjoy the benefits of using vinyl wall decals in their home decor.

Here are some tips and how-to's to help you use wall decals on your rough or textured walls:

1. Purchase wall decals that have bolder, plain print. If your walls aren't as rough as the ones in these pictures, you can get by with some cursive, script lettering; but generally the bolder, plain fonts are easier to apply. The thickness of the lettering provides more material to stick to the wall, which makes for better adherence.

2. Take your time and use patience when applying the wall decal. By working slowly and carefully, you CAN get the decal applied. The biggest challenge is getting the top tape layer off of the lettering. Since the wall isn't a smooth surface, the decals won't adhere perfectly. If a letter gets moved accidentally, you might need to place it by hand. This is another reason why plain lettering works better than cursive, connected lettering.

3. Firmly rub the wall decal down with your fingers after you remove the tape. In the photo above, you can see the slight curve in the "N" that came after we rubbed each letter down well. The decal  curved into a groove in the wall, which is good, it means it has adhered. You can only see the curve by looking very closely–no one will be the wiser.

The pictures above were taken two weeks after the vinyl wall decal was applied to the "knockdown" textured wall. We wanted to be sure that the decal STAYED on the wall–and it did! We are confident you'll have the same success with our vinyl wall decals.

DIY Ideas with Wall Stickers on Different Surfaces

Vinyl wall stickers aren't just for walls!

Choose a Quality Wall Decal

The goal of this post is to clear up some of the confusion about types of wall decals and how to choose a quality product. We all want to get value for our dollars spent, and we want our great new look to last.

Customers sometimes contact us with questions or problems about their wall decals, especially those bought from competitors. After visiting with these customers, we knew the product they were dealing with was not ours, but we still wanted to help sort it out. Some of these problems included:

• how to remove a wall sticker that was pulling off the paint (see Reasons #2 and #3 below);

• how to apply a sticker printed on sticky plastic instead of being die-cut (see Reason #4)

Here are four important things to know so you can choose a quality wall sticker:

1. Make sure you read the application instructions before you buy. These will tell you how well the product is made. If the manufacturer is sending you a film to apply to the sticker, that's a red flag – a reputable wall decal manufacturer has already applied this transfer film to the wall sticker. If you have to do this yourself and don't have a lot of experience, you may get wrinkles, crooked lettering, etc., making a quality wall decal application almost impossible. We often see this on wall decals from China and Hong Kong.

2. Do make sure that the material is designed for Home Décor use. Vinyl stickers for signage existed a long time before Home Décor wall decals became popular. Stickers for signs need super strong adhesive to withstand outdoor elements–PLUS they need to be glossy to attract attention. Neither Glossy nor Strong Adhesive types are recommended for Home Décor use.

3. Choose a wall decal with a Matte finish for the best Home Décor application. The non-shiny look of a Matte finish allows the wall decals to look like a custom paint application when adhered to your wall. All high-quality wall stickers have this Matte finish.

4. Verify that the item is a Die-cut Wall Decal, not just an image printed on sticky plastic. There is a huge difference! A die-cut wall decal has NO background permanently attached to it or surrounding it (ie. no sticky clear plastic), just the vinyl die-cut lettering/design that will go on the wall. Some cheap wall decals are not actually decals – they are just a design printed on thin plastic material with a sticky coating, which does not adhere well to anything except smooth surfaces. Plus, the clear plastic looks tacky on your wall.

Home Decor Basics: Painting Tips & Tricks

We all want our homes to be warm and inviting. Painting the walls is the single most dramatic way to refresh the interior. You can easily change the look of a room in a single day with a fresh coat of new color. Painting is one of the primary layers of home decor and should be done before updating furniture and accessories. So let's get to it!

Painting doesn't have to be difficult. Planning and preparation are key. Let's assume you have chosen your color and, with the help of your local paint or hardware store, purchased the correct type of paint for your walls (flat, satin, eggshell, high gloss, enamel). Don't be afraid to ask the paint experts for help.

Now, here are some tips that will have you painting like a pro in no time, with admirable results.

Assemble Your Tools

The supplies needed may vary from job to job, and depend on what you have on hand, but the basics remain the same.

• Rollers, roller covers of the correct nap for your wall texture, and an extension pole
• 1"- 2" brush for cutting in and small spaces - slightly angled brushes work best
• Paint tray and liners
• Drop cloths and rags
• Painter's tape (the blue tape)
• Spackle paste and a putty knife to fill in holes

Prepare the Room

Doing this will protect furniture and floors, plus ensure the finished product looks great and lasts long.

• Remove small furniture, wall hangings, drapes, etc.  
• Remove switch plates and hardware, if possible
• Use masking tape or plastic to cover anything you can't remove 
• Small items (like screws) can be covered with vaseline or chapstick (easy to wipe off later)
• Move large furniture items to the center of the room and cover with a drop cloth 
• Tape off woodwork and make sure plastic dropcloths are taped down
• Clean surfaces as needed (dust and remove loose items or particles) 
• Spackle holes as needed and let dry per directions on container

Paint! 

The typical order of painting starts with "cutting in" (painting the edges about 2" deep), then the ceiling (if you are painting it), then painting walls, and finally painting the woodwork.

• If you have a steady hand while using a stiff 2" brush, you can forego the tape for cutting in; just make sure to have a damp cloth available for quick wipe-ups
• Use short back-and-forth strokes to apply paint, but always finish with long, smooth strokes 
• Dip your brush about halfway into the paint to avoid clumping up the brush and ruining it
• When using a roller, work in 3 foot sections at a time, rolling a "W" on the wall, then filling in
• Almost any color looks better with a second coat, even if the can says one-coat coverage 
• Make sure the paint is dry before applying the second coat

Clean-up 

It may be the least fun part, but once you've put everything back, you can enjoy the results!

Remember to let a newly painted room dry or cure for at least 2 weeks before applying any Wall Stickers. Wall decals are such a fun way to add "art" to any room. Changing & Removing Vinyl Wall Decals

Is it time to replace an old vinyl wall decal with a new one you love? Let us show you how easy it is to remove vinyl wall decals in your home decor. The good news is–they're as easy to remove as they are to apply!

Check out the photos below; you'll see that no paint is coming off the wall or even stuck to the back of the wall decal itself during removal. Usually it is exactly this easy. However, there are a couple of factors that might affect the ease of removal of a vinyl wall sticker or decal.

We need to understand that wall paint not only needs to dry, it needs time to "cure." What does this mean? Well, paint goes through a two-stage process: in the first stage, the paint "dries" when the solvents and thinners evaporate from the paint on the wall; in the second stage, the paint "cures" when it hardens into a solid film. This might take up to two weeks, or longer if it's very humid in the room, or you're experiencing wet or humid weather. If a vinyl wall sticker is applied before the paint has fully cured, there could be some paint loss when you eventually remove that decal.

Besides just peeling them off, some people like is using a hair blow dryer to remove wall decals. The heat softens the wall sticker's adhesive, making it easier to peel off. CAUTION: heat from the hair blow dryer can be HOT on your fingers too, so be careful with this, especially if children are helping you.

In the photo below, the new border we applied in our entryway is being removed, with the help of eager little hands. Be sure to read the caution below the photo, you'll want to control which wall decals are removed–and when!

CAUTION: Only show children how to do this IF they are old enough to know which stickers you want removed and which ones should stay up!

Helpful Hints to Refresh Your Laundry Room

After all, the Laundry Room is where a lot of the "clean routine" happens in your home–it needs to be both attractive and functional, a pleasant place to complete those tasks that keep your family humming along on a clean track. It's quite suitable as a Do it yourself project too.

Has your Laundry Room become a catch-all? A dingy place you try to avoid? Let's change that. First, figure out how you want the room to function: is it also a mudroom? a second bathroom? a sewing space? Decide how you want it to look and where you want things to go. 

Next comes cleaning. Remove everything that will no longer hide out in there. Sweep and mop the floor, wipe down shelves, scrub cabinets and appliances in and out, and clean your sink. (Don't forget to check lint traps, they can be a fire hazard.) Wash any windows and curtains. Now the fun begins! 

Revamp your Laundry Room with color! Nothing refreshes like a coat of paint. Choose a cheerful wall color that energizes you.

Now you're ready to reorganize! Get rid of all the supplies you no longer use. Then be sure you have handy shelves, rolling carts or cabinets in place for storage. Use a fun patterned fabric to hide unsightly things like pipes under the sink. You'll also need a place to fold clothes: a countertop (a drop-down one if space is tight) or a rolling cart with a counter on it. Be sure you have a sorting cart to separate colors and whites. Hooks or hanging bars and hangers can be used for drip-dry items and will save on ironing if you hang things up right out of the dryer. 

Laundry starts and ends elsewhere–mostly in bedrooms and kitchens. How about different colored hampers, clothes baskets and hangers for each member of the family? It makes putting away clean laundry so much easier!
